Will Ferrell Is Now Part Owner of a Los Angeles Soccer Team

His sports fandom is no joke. At a press conference Thursday, Los Angeles Football Club announced that Will Ferrell is its newest part owner.

The soccer team’s 26-person ownership group also includes Magic Johnson and former Boston Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra, whose wife is retired soccer legend Mia Hamm.

Hamm announced Ferrell’s stake in the team Thursday: “This is not a joke,” she clarified.

LAFC is one of the newest members of the MLS. It was only announced last year and won’t start playing until 2018, when their new stadium is completed.

Ferrell’s experience with soccer is mostly limited to 2005’s Kicking and Screaming, in which Ferrell’s character took over as the coach of a children’s soccer team. However, the Daddy’s Home star recently revealed on The Graham Norton Show that he also coaches his three sons’ soccer team in real life.

Last year, he took on professional baseball for Ferrell Takes the Field, an HBO documentary in which he played all nine on-field positions, playing with ten different MLB teams, all in the same day.
