It’s surprising how easy it is for parents
to remember how to quote, "Honour your father and mother that your days
may be long in the earth," and forget that the same bible also says,
"Do not provoke your children to anger."
Many parents are experts at using emotional
blackmail. This should not be so. They fail to realise that at some point, they
have to let their children fly out of their nest.
Yes, I know they do some of what they do
out of good intentions but many also take decisions based on selfish reasons
without putting into consideration the opinions of their children, even the
adults.
As a young person trying to surmount
present day challenges and make the best out of life, should I also be battling
with unnecessary parental pressure on trivial matters?
Parents and would-be parents, the
realisation that a child has grown and has started making some important
decisions by themselves can be hard to accept but don't frustrate your children.
Even Jesus says that his yoke is easy and his burden is light. He says he will
not make us pass through experiences we will not survive.
Don't leave your kids with the option of
disobeying you.
As hard as it is to accept, it’s their
life. Play your role, guide them but don't try to control everything because
you'll get heartbroken.
Your respect is not gotten from shouting
and expressing autocracy.
Teach them the way of the lord. Commit them
into his hands and let the Holy Spirit do his job.
Don't force your convictions on them; don't
make them ask God why they came through you.
As for you children, when you're convinced
beyond doubt, the direction in which your life is headed, it’s your duty to sit
them down and 'try' to explain. Don't be blackmailed. Disobedience is a point
of view. Choose either to live your life for your parents that are almost
through living theirs or for yourself and the people that God has commissioned
you to impact.
I don't think God is happy with a parent
that frustrates his/her children.
